Personal accident cover in car insurance is an add-on that pays a fixed sum to the driver, passengers or their dependents when a road accident causes death, disability or bodily injuries. It pays regardless of who caused the crash, and it fills the gap UAE third-party cover leaves around the at-fault driver.
Most motor policies are built around the car and around other people's losses. This page explains what personal accident insurance cover adds for the people inside your vehicle: what it pays, who it protects, what it excludes and what it costs. When you are ready to add it, compare and buy car insurance with the personal accident option switched on and see the price difference across insurers side by side.
Personal accident cover (often shortened to PA cover) is an optional benefit attached to a motor policy. If an accident in or around the insured vehicle causes physical injuries, permanent disability or death, the insurer pays a pre-agreed amount to the injured person or, after a death, to the policyholder's nominated dependents. The payout does not depend on proving fault.
The benefit is usually split by person. PA cover for the driver protects whoever is behind the wheel, and PA cover for passengers protects the people travelling with them. On some policy schedules the passenger benefit appears as PAB, short for personal accident benefit, so "PAB to passenger" simply means the passenger part of this cover is included.
The Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy, issued under Insurance Authority Board Decision No. 25 of 2016 and now administered by the Central Bank of the UAE, sets the baseline. Its third-party section pays for death or bodily injury to any person, passengers included, except the insured and the driver who caused the accident. Claims for family members of the insured are capped at AED 200,000 per person.
That is why third-party car insurance gives you no personal injury cover for yourself if you cause the crash. The same Unified policy defines a personal accidents endorsement as extra cover for the driver, the insured and passengers outside the basic cover, bought for an additional premium. Many comprehensive car insurance plans build in driver cover, and some include passengers, but the limit and who counts as covered vary by insurer, so check your policy schedule.
| Who is injured | Third-party cover pays? | Personal accident add-on pays? |
|---|---|---|
| Pedestrian or occupant of the other vehicle | Yes, at the amount a court awards | No, third-party liability handles this |
| Passenger in your car (not a family member) | Yes, if your driver caused the accident | Yes, a fixed sum whoever caused it |
| Passenger who is your spouse, parent or child | Yes, capped at AED 200,000 per person | Yes, on top of the capped amount |
| You or the driver who caused the accident | No | Yes, this is the main gap it closes |
Inclusions vary by insurer, but the services covered under a motor personal accident benefit usually fall into six groups. Death and permanent disability are paid as lump sums; medical costs are reimbursed up to a limit.
The disability scale matters more than the headline number. Two policies can both advertise AED 200,000, yet pay very different amounts for the same partial injury because their percentage tables differ. Ask for the scale before you buy.
Personal accident cover pays for accidental injury only. Claims are commonly refused in these situations:
These sit alongside the wider car insurance exclusions that apply to the rest of your motor policy, so a claim refused on the car side is often refused on the injury side for the same reason.
The right type depends on who drives the car and who rides in it. Most UAE motor policies offer some combination of the four below.
| Type | Who it protects | Typical buyer | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal accident cover for owner-driver | The policyholder or named driver | Anyone who drives their own car | Other drivers of your car may not be covered |
| Personal accident cover for passengers | Everyone else seated in the car | Families and car-poolers | Limited to the car's registered seating capacity |
| Personal accident cover for paid drivers | A hired or household driver | Households with a private driver | Must be added separately; not part of owner-driver cover |
| Group personal accident cover | Employees driving company vehicles | Businesses and fleet operators | Usually tied to business use of the vehicles |
Owner-driver cover protects the policyholder while driving the insured car. If a friend or relative regularly drives it, check whether the cover follows the named driver or the vehicle; adding a driver to your policy does not automatically extend personal accident cover to them.
Passenger cover pays each occupant, up to the number of seats on the registration card. A five-seat sedan carries cover for four passengers; a sixth person squeezed in is not insured. Some insurers price passenger cover per seat, others as a single flat add-on.
A household or chauffeur driver is not the owner and is not a passenger, so neither of the covers above protects them. Insurers offer a separate paid-driver extension, and families who employ a driver should ask for it by name when buying the policy.
Businesses can insure every driver under one group policy instead of adding cover car by car. Personal accident cover for fleet vehicles is normally arranged alongside commercial car insurance, and it protects staff during work trips and, depending on the wording, their commute. Personal accident insurance for employees can also be bought as a stand-alone group policy that covers accidents away from the car.
A stand-alone policy is not attached to any car and covers accidents at home, at work or while travelling. These plans more often include weekly income benefits: ADNIC's stand-alone personal accident policy, for example, pays a weekly amount based on your earnings while you cannot work. That benefit belongs to ADNIC's separate accident policy, not to ADNIC car insurance.
Personal accident takaful works the same way under a Shariah-compliant structure, with contributions paid into a shared fund instead of premiums. Several takaful car insurance providers include it on their comprehensive plans, and you can compare them in the same quote as conventional insurers.
A common motor personal accident limit in the UAE is AED 200,000 per person on Salama's comprehensive plan for both driver and passengers.
Benefit levels differ by insurer and plan, so the limit is worth comparing alongside the premium. Salama car insurance is one example that builds driver and passenger cover into its comprehensive plan; to see how other insurers set their limits, compare UAE car insurance providers.
The cost of a personal accident cover add-on rises with three things: the sum insured per person, the number of seats covered, and whether paid drivers are included. A 2018 UAE market survey put the average driver add-on at AED 120 a year; passenger cover is often priced per seat on top.
The premium can be spread out: pay with Tabby or split the premium with Tamara when you buy the policy.
Yes, for most drivers. Add it if you drive a car on third-party cover, if you are the main income for dependents, or if you regularly carry family members, whose third-party compensation is capped at AED 200,000 each. Skip the extra add-on only if your comprehensive plan already includes driver and passenger cover at a limit you are comfortable with and you hold stand-alone accident cover.
The best personal accident insurance for a car is not the one with the biggest headline limit. It is the one whose disability scale, passenger seats and paid-driver terms match how the car is actually used.
Cheap personal accident cover comes from buying the right amount, not from cutting the benefit you need.
A clean record matters because the no-claims bonus reduces the whole premium the add-on sits on. If you are already choosing extras, look at roadside assistance cover and the other car insurance add-ons in the same quote, since some insurers price add-ons as a package.
A personal accident claim starts at the scene and is built on two documents: the police report and the medical report.
Keep the UAE emergency numbers after an accident in your phone. For the wider process, see how a car insurance claim works, and check the time limits for accident claims so a valid claim is not lost to a late notification.
Insurers typically ask for these documents:
Personal accident cover costs little next to the claims it pays. Get a car insurance quote and compare plans with driver and passenger cover included before you renew.
