Car insurance is a legal requirement for every vehicle registered in Abu Dhabi, and you cannot complete a registration renewal without a valid policy. Third-party liability is the legal minimum; comprehensive cover is optional and protects your own car as well.
This page covers what car insurance in Abu Dhabi costs, how third-party and comprehensive cover differ, how to renew before your Mulkiya expires, and how to pay in instalments. You can compare car insurance quotes online from UAE insurers and buy in minutes, without visiting a branch.
Third-party cover for a standard Abu Dhabi-registered car starts from AED 600 a year, and comprehensive cover starts from AED 1,200. As a rule of thumb, comprehensive costs roughly twice third-party for the same vehicle.
Abu Dhabi car insurance prices are set quote by quote rather than city by city. The car's market value, your claim history, the repair type you choose, the excess you accept and the insurer's own underwriting rules all move the number. Two drivers with the same model routinely get auto insurance quotes several hundred dirhams apart, which is why comparing beats accepting a renewal notice.

Eligible policies can be split into four payments instead of one upfront premium. This is the main reason drivers choose an aggregator over buying direct: most Abu Dhabi insurers do not offer instalments on their own websites.
Depending on checkout eligibility and policy value, you can pay for car insurance with Tabby or car insurance with Tamara, with the first payment taken today and the remainder spread over the following months.
| Policy Price | First Payment Today | Remaining Payments |
|---|---|---|
| AED 800 | AED 200 | 3 × AED 200 |
| AED 1,200 | AED 300 | 3 × AED 300 |
| AED 2,000 | AED 500 | 3 × AED 500 |
Instalment availability depends on the selected payment provider, the policy amount, and checkout eligibility. Splitting the payment does not change the total premium.
Choose comprehensive if your car is financed, is newer than about five years, or would cost more to repair than you could comfortably pay out of pocket. Choose third-party only if you genuinely would not repair the car after a serious accident.
Comprehensive car insurance pays for damage to your own vehicle as well as damage you cause to others. Depending on the policy terms, cover may include:
Damage to your own vehicle after an accident
Third-party property damage and bodily injury liability
Fire, theft, floods, and natural-event damage
Repairs through approved or agency garages
Optional add-ons such as roadside assistance, rental car cover, or passenger personal accident benefits
Comprehensive policies are commonly chosen for:
New vehicles
Financed cars
Luxury vehicles
Drivers with long daily commutes
Families wanting broader protection
Third-party car insurance is the legal minimum for driving in the UAE. It pays for injury and damage you cause to other people, and nothing at all towards your own vehicle. It typically covers:
Third-party bodily injury or death
Third-party property damage
Legal liability subject to policy terms
This option is often suitable for:
Older vehicles
Lower-value cars
Drivers primarily focused on legal compliance and lower premiums
| Feature | Comprehensive Insurance | Third-Party Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Covers your own vehicle | Yes | No |
| Covers third-party liabilities | Yes | Yes |
| Theft and natural disaster cover | Usually included | No |
| Add-ons available | Yes | Limited |
| Typical premium | Higher | Lower |
| Best suited for | Newer and higher-value vehicles | Older and lower-value vehicles |
If you are still weighing the two, our guide to how the two cover types compare works through the trade-offs claim by claim.
| Your Situation | Recommended Starting Point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You drive an older or lower-value car | Third-party insurance | Lower premium and legal compliance |
| Your vehicle is new or financed | Comprehensive insurance | Protects your own vehicle as well as third parties |
| You regularly commute between Abu Dhabi and Dubai | Comprehensive + roadside assistance | Higher road exposure increases repair and breakdown risks |
| You own a luxury or premium vehicle | Comprehensive + agency repair | Repair quality and parts become more important |
| You want the lowest-cost legal cover | Third-party insurance | Focused on liability protection |
| You frequently travel with family passengers | Comprehensive + passenger benefits | Additional protection for passengers |
| You may drive into Oman | Comprehensive + Oman extension | Oman cover is not automatically included in every policy |
Every motor policy sold in the UAE is written on the Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy, issued under Insurance Authority Board of Directors' Decision No. 25 of 2016 and now held in the Central Bank of the UAE Rulebook. It sets the minimum terms every insurer must honour, which is why third-party cover is broadly comparable between providers and price becomes the deciding factor.
Under that policy, third-party property damage is insured up to AED 2,000,000 for any one accident. Third-party bodily injury or death is paid at the amount awarded by the court, with no upper limit, except for the insured's spouse, parents and children, where compensation is capped at AED 200,000 per person.
Driving without valid insurance in the UAE carries a fine, black points and vehicle impoundment, and Abu Dhabi will not process a registration renewal without a live policy on record.
Buying car insurance online in Abu Dhabi takes a few minutes and does not require a branch visit or paper documents. The same five steps apply whether you are insuring a newly purchased vehicle or replacing an expiring policy.
Add cover you actually need, such as roadside assistance, a rental car during repairs, personal effects, or an Oman extension.
Renew your car insurance before your Mulkiya expires, not after. Abu Dhabi will not complete a registration renewal without a valid policy, and the insurance certificate is the document the renewal process checks first.
Renewal is also the cheapest moment to change insurer. Your existing provider's renewal quote is not automatically the best price available, and switching carries no penalty once the current policy ends.
Our guide to Abu Dhabi car registration renewal sets out the current fees, inspection rules and government channels in full.
Abu Dhabi allows a 30-day grace period after registration expiry. No fine applies if you renew within it, but driving the vehicle during that window is still prohibited. After the grace period, a late fee of AED 25 per day applies, capped at AED 1,000.
Driving with expired registration carries an AED 500 fine, four black points and a seven-day vehicle impoundment. An expired insurance policy also means no cover at all: any accident during the gap is paid entirely out of your own pocket, including third-party claims.
Because the Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy standardises the core terms, the real differences between Abu Dhabi insurers are repair type, excess level, add-on availability and how quickly claims are settled — not the cover itself. Price alone is a poor way to choose between them.
Several established Abu Dhabi insurers quote through comparison platforms. ADNIC car insurance is the motor arm of Abu Dhabi National Insurance Company, while Al Ain Ahlia car insurance is one of the emirate's longest-established providers.
Takaful options are also widely available in the emirate, including Methaq car insurance. Other insurers quoting for Abu Dhabi-registered vehicles include:

Insurers price each quote individually, which is why the same vehicle can attract very different premiums from one provider to the next.
The single biggest saving comes from comparing insurers rather than accepting a renewal quote. Beyond that, the levers below move the price in predictable ways — and each one has a cost attached.
A clean claim record is worth more than any other discount: a no-claims discount can cut a comprehensive premium substantially, and it transfers between insurers if you can produce proof. Raising your excess also lowers the premium, but how excess works matters more than the headline saving, because you pay it on every claim.
| Method | When It Helps | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|
| Compare multiple insurers | Almost always | Avoid comparing price alone |
| Choose third-party for older cars | Lower-value vehicles | Your own vehicle will not be covered |
| Increase excess | Can reduce premiums | Higher claim costs later |
| Remove unnecessary add-ons | Keeps premiums lower | Avoid removing essential protection |
| Use No-Claim Discount | Good claim-free record | Proof and eligibility may be required |
| Pay in instalments | Helps cash flow | Does not always reduce total cost |

Abu Dhabi's driving conditions shape which add-ons are worth paying for. Three risks come up repeatedly on the emirate's roads.
Long high-speed commutes: the Abu Dhabi–Dubai corridor is one of the busiest inter-emirate routes in the country. Roadside assistance and a rental car during repairs matter far more to daily commuters than to city-only drivers.
Sand, heat and flash flooding: sandstorms cause paint and windscreen damage, summer heat is hard on batteries and tyres, and heavy rain produces sudden flooding on underpasses. Whether your policy pays depends on the wording — see what flood and sandstorm damage is actually covered for.
Darb toll gates: Abu Dhabi's toll system charges at registered gates during peak hours. Unpaid passes generate escalating fines that are separate from your insurance but attach to the same vehicle record, and they can block a registration renewal.
Report the accident to the police and your insurer before moving the vehicle or arranging any repair. A police report is the document most Abu Dhabi claims depend on, and repairing before the insurer inspects the damage can invalidate the claim.

Claim timelines depend on insurer procedures, document completeness and accident severity. Before you file, it is worth checking what a policy does not cover, since a rejected claim usually comes down to an exclusion rather than a dispute over the damage.
An insurance policy belongs to the vehicle and the owner together, so selling the car does not automatically end it. You can usually either cancel for a partial refund or move the cover to your replacement vehicle, depending on the insurer's terms.
The rules on transferring a policy when you sell differ between insurers, and the no-claims record stays with you rather than the car, so keep the certificate when the policy closes.
If your vehicle is registered outside Abu Dhabi, or you are moving between emirates, start from the relevant city page. Al Ain is part of the emirate of Abu Dhabi but registers separately, so drivers there should use car insurance in Al Ain.
Premiums vary noticeably by make and model. For the most commonly insured cars in the emirate:
