Takaful car insurance is Sharia-compliant motor cover in which drivers pay contributions into a shared fund that pays claims, instead of buying a transfer of risk from an insurer. In the UAE it is sold by a small group of takaful companies licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE, and it gives you the same legal cover as any conventional car policy.
This page lists every takaful car insurance company in the UAE, checked against the Central Bank's takaful register, with the former names you may still see on an old policy and a straight answer on which ones are actually selling motor cover today. When you are ready to price one, you can compare car insurance quotes online in a single form.
Car takaful is motor insurance built on mutual risk-sharing. Every participant pays a contribution into a participants' fund; claims are paid out of that fund; and the takaful company runs it for a disclosed fee rather than keeping the underwriting profit. It is the reason people searching for Islamic insurance companies in the UAE end up with a takaful operator.
Three rules make a policy takaful rather than conventional:
What you are covered for does not change. Every motor takaful policy in the UAE is written on the Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy, the same wording conventional insurers use, so the difference is in how the money is held, not in what gets repaired.
The Central Bank of the UAE's takaful register lists 10 licensed takaful companies (checked on 29 September 2026). Seven of them sell motor takaful to private drivers today; the other three are suspended or do not write car insurance. If you want the full market rather than takaful only, you can compare every UAE car insurance provider on one page.

Salama is the trading name of Islamic Arab Insurance Company, founded in Dubai in 1979 and listed on the Dubai Financial Market. It was the UAE's first takaful operator and still writes motor, medical, home and travel cover. For drivers who want the longest takaful track record in the country, start with Salama car insurance.
Methaq Takaful Insurance Company is an Abu Dhabi insurer listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, and drivers often search for it as Meethaq or Mehtaq. Its motor policies come in comprehensive and third-party forms; plans, garages and claims are covered on the Methaq car insurance page.
If your old certificate says Noor Takaful, your insurer is now Watania. Dar Al Takaful bought Noor Takaful in 2020, merged with National Takaful Company (Watania) in 2022, and became Watania International Holding PJSC in 2023; motor cover is written by its subsidiary Watania Takaful General PJSC. Current plans sit under Watania car insurance.
Orient Takaful PJSC, formerly Orient UNB Takaful, is a separate company from Orient Insurance PJSC, although both belong to the Al-Futtaim group. Check which name is printed on your renewal notice before you compare: details of Orient Takaful car insurance, and how it differs from Orient Insurance's conventional cover, sit on our Orient page.
Abu Dhabi National Takaful Company (ADNTC) sells motor takaful directly through its own website and is one of the two takaful partners behind Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank's car takaful. Drivers registering a vehicle in the capital can compare it alongside other options for car insurance in Abu Dhabi.
Sukoon Takaful PJSC is the former ASCANA, renamed after Sukoon Insurance took a majority stake. It writes comprehensive and third-party motor takaful from Dubai. Do not confuse it with Sukoon Insurance, its conventional parent, which sells non-takaful car insurance under the Sukoon name.
Dubai Islamic Insurance & Reinsurance Company, known as Aman, has written takaful since 2002 and is listed on the Dubai Financial Market. It offers comprehensive and third-party motor takaful, and its plans and quotes are on the Aman car insurance page.
Three names on the register will not give you a motor quote. The most important is YAS Takaful: the Central Bank suspended its licence under Article 33(2)(k) of Federal Decree Law No. 48 of 2023 with effect from 18 August 2025, so it cannot issue or renew policies, although it stays liable for contracts already signed. What that means for existing policyholders is explained on the YAS Takaful car insurance page.
The only real difference between takaful and conventional car insurance is who owns the pool of money. Cover, exclusions and the claims process follow the same Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy, and both are sold as comprehensive car insurance or third-party car insurance.
| Takaful car insurance | Conventional car insurance | |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay | A contribution (tabarru') into the participants' fund | A premium to the insurance company |
| Who carries the risk | The participants, collectively | The insurer |
| Underwriting surplus | Belongs to participants; may be distributed or retained in the fund | Kept by the insurer as profit |
| Operator's income | A disclosed Wakala fee, and a Mudaraba share where used | Underwriting and investment profit |
| Investments | Sharia-compliant only | No religious restriction |
| Oversight | Central Bank of the UAE plus an Internal Sharia Supervision Committee | Central Bank of the UAE |
| Policy wording | Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy | Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy |
| Cover types | Comprehensive, third-party | Comprehensive, third-party |
A surplus distribution is not the same thing as a no-claims discount. The discount rewards your own claim-free years at renewal; a surplus depends on how the whole fund performed, can be zero in a bad year, and is shared out only under rules approved by the company's Sharia committee.
No, not as a rule. Takaful and conventional insurers price the same car and driver using the same factors — vehicle value, age, driving history, repair type — so a takaful auto insurance quote can land above or below a conventional one. The only reliable way to find the cheapest takaful motor insurance for your car is to put the same details into several insurers at once and compare like for like.
If Sharia compliance is your reason for buying, choose from the seven takaful operators actively selling motor cover and let price and repair terms decide between them. Do not buy or renew with YAS Takaful while its licence is suspended. These are the six things worth checking before you pay:
Two of those checks are easy to overlook. Whether roadside assistance cover is bundled can change which quote is really cheapest, and the insurer-by-insurer UAE insurer garage lists show where your car would actually be repaired. If you are still deciding on the level of cover, our guide to comprehensive vs third-party cover sets out when each makes sense.
Yes, businesses can buy takaful vehicle insurance for vans, pickups and fleet cars. Several of the operators above, Watania among them, write corporate motor takaful alongside their personal plans, and the process is the same as for any commercial vehicle insurance: the policy is issued in the company's name against its trade licence, with the vehicles listed on one schedule.
Buying takaful car insurance in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE takes a few minutes on Lookinsure, and the quote flow is the same one used for all car insurance in Dubai. Takaful insurers appear alongside conventional ones where available, so you can see the price gap before you choose.
If a single payment is a stretch, you can pay for car insurance in installments at checkout. Instalments are provided by the payment partner, not the takaful operator, so check the payment terms if an interest-free structure matters to you.
