Loss of personal belongings in car insurance is a benefit that pays to repair or replace personal items stolen from, or damaged inside, your insured car after a theft, fire or accident. In the UAE it is never part of third-party cover: it comes either built into a comprehensive plan at a fixed limit or as an add-on you choose when you compare and buy car insurance.
Most UAE car insurance plans cap personal belongings cover at between AED 2,000 and AED 5,000. Those figures were verified against the plans listed on Lookinsure, and the limit on your own policy schedule is the one that counts.
In motor insurance, personal belongings cover is an extension to your policy that protects the personal items in the insured car, such as a laptop, phone, bag or sunglasses, against theft, fire and accidental damage. Insurers also call it personal effects or personal possessions cover; in every version it protects what you carry, while the rest of the policy protects the car. Because the cover is tied to the vehicle, items stolen from your hand or your home are outside it.
Only when your policy lists the benefit. Third-party car insurance never does, because it pays for the damage you cause to other people. Comprehensive car insurance often does, up to a sub-limit, and where a comprehensive plan leaves it out you can add it as an extension.
| Policy type | Are your belongings covered? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party only | No | Covers your liability to others under the Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy, not your own property |
| Third-party, fire and theft | Not by default | The theft cover protects the car itself, not what was inside it |
| Comprehensive | Often, up to AED 2,000–5,000 | Whether "personal belongings" or "personal effects" appears on your schedule, and at what limit |
| Comprehensive with a belongings extension | Yes, up to the limit you choose | The per-item cap, the excess and the exclusions |
A third-party, fire and theft policy is the one most often misread: it pays out if the car is stolen, but a laptop taken from the back seat is a separate risk that needs its own cover.
The verdict: if you regularly leave a laptop, camera or work equipment in the car, choose a comprehensive plan whose belongings limit is at least the replacement value of those items. At current UAE limits, that means a plan offering AED 5,000 rather than AED 2,000.
Personal belongings insurance pays for lost or stolen personal items, and for items damaged inside the car, when one of the insured events causes the loss.
Yes, but only with personal belongings cover in place and only when the theft meets the insurer's security conditions. A claim without signs of forced entry is usually declined, whatever the items were worth.
Some comprehensive plans go further. Sukoon car insurance, for example, includes personal belongings up to AED 5,000 and valet-parking theft as standard on its comprehensive cover. If it is the vehicle rather than its contents that has gone, the rules for theft of the car itself are different.
Personal belongings limits on UAE car insurance plans range from AED 2,000 to AED 5,000. The figures below were verified.
| Insurer | How the cover is provided | Personal belongings limit |
|---|---|---|
| Sukoon | Included in comprehensive | Up to AED 5,000 |
| RAK Insurance | Included in comprehensive (theft, fire or accident) | Up to AED 5,000 |
| QIC (Qatar Insurance) | Included on every comprehensive tier | AED 5,000 |
| Liva | Included on Smart and Executive plans, not on Value | AED 5,000 |
| Adamjee | Included on higher comprehensive tiers | Up to AED 5,000 |
| ADNIC | Varies by comprehensive tier | AED 2,000 to AED 5,000 |
| GIG Gulf | Included in Prestige and Perfect comprehensive plans | AED 4,000 |
| Watania | Included in comprehensive (takaful) | AED 4,000 |
| Insurance House | Included in comprehensive | Up to AED 3,000 |
| Tokio Marine | Varies by plan | AED 2,500 to AED 3,500 |
| Yas Takaful | Theft of items from inside the car | Up to AED 2,500 |
| Methaq | Included in comprehensive (takaful) | Up to AED 2,000 |
| Dubai National (DNI) | Included in comprehensive | Up to AED 2,000 |
| Al Sagr | Optional extension (fire, theft or collision) | Up to AED 2,000 |
The top band is the most practical for anyone who carries a laptop. RAK car insurance pays up to AED 5,000 for items lost through theft, fire or an accident, while GIG Gulf car insurance sits just below at AED 4,000 on both of its comprehensive plans.
At the lower end, Methaq car insurance includes AED 2,000 within its takaful comprehensive cover, and Al Sagr car insurance sells the same AED 2,000 limit as an optional personal possessions extension rather than including it.
A simple rule of thumb: add up the replacement cost of everything you routinely leave in the car, and if the total is higher than your plan's limit, move up a tier or insure the most valuable item separately. Limits can change at renewal, so read the schedule on every quote when you compare UAE car insurance providers.
Every personal belongings policy has exclusions, and most declined claims fall into one of six groups.
Injuries to you or your passengers are a separate risk handled by personal accident cover. For the exclusions that apply to the rest of your motor policy, see the wider car insurance exclusions.
Three deductions decide what a personal belongings claim actually pays. The first is the limit: a total cap for the policy and, on some plans, a lower cap for any single item, so a AED 7,000 laptop claimed under a AED 5,000 limit returns at most AED 5,000. The second is the excess, the amount you pay towards each claim, which is explained in how car insurance excess works.
The third is depreciation. Most insurers settle on the item's value at the time of the loss, not its purchase price, so a three-year-old laptop is paid at less than it cost. Wear and tear itself is never covered. Keeping receipts and photos of your valuables is the most effective way to protect the amount you recover.
The cheapest personal belongings cover is the one already inside your comprehensive plan, so check your schedule before paying for an extension. Insurers rarely publish a stand-alone price for the add-on; the cost appears in the premium of each quote, and it rises with the limit you choose.
If your plan leaves out car key replacement cover and windscreen protection as well, ask whether buying them with belongings cover in one go costs less than adding each extension later. Compare the full set of other car insurance add-ons before you decide which extensions are worth paying for.
If the annual premium is the obstacle, you can spread it: pay with Tabby or split the cost into Tamara instalments at checkout.
Car insurance with personal belongings cover is bought like any other plan: get a car insurance quote, then check the belongings line on each result.
A personal belongings claim moves fastest when the police report and proof of ownership are ready before you contact the insurer. The steps below follow the order most UAE insurers expect; the general car insurance claim process covers the parts that apply to every motor claim.
Insurers ask for the same core documents for almost every personal belongings claim:
