Car key replacement cover is an optional car insurance add-on that pays to replace, reprogram or re-lock your car when its keys are lost, stolen or damaged. It is not part of the standard UAE motor policy, so you only have it if you add it to your plan or your insurer bundles it in.
Modern keys are small computers: a transponder chip, a remote and, on push-to-start cars, a proximity sensor paired to the immobiliser. Replacing one means a new key, a programming session and sometimes a new lock set, and that bill lands on you unless you compare car insurance quotes that include the add-on. Below is how key replacement cover in car insurance works: what it pays for, where it stops, what it costs and how a claim is made.
Car key replacement insurance is a benefit attached to your motor policy that reimburses the cost of a new key, its programming and, where needed, the lock set, after your keys are lost, stolen or damaged. Insurers also sell it as key protect cover, lost car key insurance or a car key replacement policy extension; the product is the same.
It protects the key, not the car. If thieves take the car itself, that is a theft claim under your main policy, not a key claim.
No, not by default. The Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy, issued by the Central Bank of the UAE, sets the minimum cover every UAE motor policy must carry, and it contains no benefit for lost or stolen keys. Standard comprehensive car insurance covers your car against theft and damage, while third-party car insurance covers only your liability to others; neither pays for a new key on its own.
Key cover comes from one of two places: a car key replacement add-on you choose at checkout, or an enhanced comprehensive plan that lists it as an included benefit. Read the benefits table in your policy schedule. If "key replacement" is not named there, you do not have it.
Most car key replacement cover responds to four situations. Limits and conditions differ between insurers, so treat this as the typical shape of the cover rather than a promise from any single plan.
| Situation | What the cover usually pays | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Lost keys | A new key, cutting and programming to your car's immobiliser | Most insurers pay for the same type of key as the original, often manufacturer-made only |
| Stolen keys | A new key and reprogramming so the stolen key no longer starts the car | A police report is normally required |
| Break-in or damaged car key lockset | Repair or replacement of the door, ignition or boot locks | Some wordings pay only the labour, not the parts |
| Damaged key or key fob | Repair or replacement of a broken remote, shell or chip | Gradual wear and flat batteries are excluded |
Being locked out with the key still inside the car is a different problem. That call-out usually sits under roadside assistance cover, not under key replacement, so check which of the two your plan carries if lockouts worry you more than lost keys.
If someone uses stolen keys to drive the car away, the key add-on only replaces the keys. The car itself is claimed under the theft section of comprehensive cover, and the insurer will look closely at how the keys were taken; our guide to how car theft claims work explains that process. Bags, phones and documents taken in the same break-in fall under loss of personal belongings cover, a separate add-on.
These exclusions appear in most key cover wordings. Check your own policy for the exact list.
Replacing a vehicle key in the UAE ranges from under AED 400 for a basic key to AED 5,000 or more for a luxury smart key. The price depends on the key technology and whether the work is done by the dealer or an independent locksmith.
| Key type | Typical replacement cost | Common on |
|---|---|---|
| Basic remote key, no chip | AED 150–400 | Older or entry-level models |
| Transponder key | AED 400–800 | Most cars built after the mid-2000s |
| Smart key (keyless entry, push-to-start) | AED 800–2,500 | Most new mid-range cars |
| Luxury or high-security smart key | AED 2,500–5,000+ | Premium brands that need dealer programming |
The top of that table is where the add-on earns its keep. Owners pricing Mercedes car insurance, Tesla car insurance or Range Rover car insurance are the ones most likely to face a dealer-only key and a four-figure bill.
Keys that need dealer programming are usual across the German premium brands too, so drivers comparing BMW car insurance, Audi car insurance or Porsche car insurance should check that the per-claim limit covers a full smart key, not just a basic remote.
As car key replacement cover is an add-on, the premium charge is minimal: around 5%–8% of the total premium of your primary car insurance in the UAE. The figure is not fixed, because the premium depends on your car model and on the insurance company.
A simple rule of thumb: on a AED 2,000 comprehensive premium, 5%–8% works out at AED 100–160 a year, which is less than the cost of replacing a single transponder key. Some insurers price it lower when you take it alongside other car insurance add-ons, so compare the bundle, not just the line item.
Prices and limits vary more between insurers than the add-on's small size suggests, so a car key insurance comparison across plans is worth the minute it takes. You can compare UAE car insurance providers side by side, then spread the whole premium, add-ons included, if you pay with Tabby or split it with Tamara in four interest-free payments.
Insurers package key cover in two ways: some include it in their upper comprehensive tiers, and others sell it as a separate add-on. Stated limits run from AED 2,500 to unlimited among the insurers below, as listed on each insurer's Lookinsure provider page. Confirm the limit on your quote before you pay.
| Insurer | How key cover is offered | Stated limit |
|---|---|---|
| HSBC car insurance | Lock and key replacement included | Unlimited |
| RAK car insurance | Key replacement and locks on comprehensive | Up to AED 5,000 |
| Liva car insurance | Lock and key replacement on Smart and Executive plans | Up to AED 5,000 |
| Allianz car insurance | Key replacement for a lost key or fob | AED 2,500 |
| ADNIC car insurance | Included on Platinum and Gold; not on Standard | Not stated |
| Fidelity United car insurance | Door-lock replacement in eligible comprehensive plans | Not stated |
| Salama car insurance | Optional add-on for electronic key reprogramming | Not stated |
| AFNIC car insurance | Optional add-on for key reprogramming and replacement | Not stated |
If a high limit matters most, start with the plans that state one in AED; if you drive an older car with a simple key, a tier that leaves key cover out will usually cost less.
Yes, if your car uses a smart key or a transponder key and you have only one or two of them. No, if your car runs on a basic key that a locksmith can copy cheaply.
Push-to-start smart keys are no longer a luxury feature. They are common on the family SUVs and saloons UAE drivers buy most, so the add-on is worth pricing whether you are comparing Toyota car insurance, Nissan car insurance or Lexus car insurance.
Two key cover policies with the same name can pay very differently. Check these six points in the wording before you choose.
You add the cover while you buy or renew your policy; there is no separate application. Start a car insurance quote and pick the add-on before you pay.
A car key replacement claim moves fastest when you report the loss straight away and keep every invoice. Follow the insurer's route rather than paying a locksmith first; some plans only reimburse approved providers.
Have these ready when you file:
Missing or incomplete paperwork is one of the most common reasons a claim stalls, so keep copies of everything. Ask your insurer whether a key claim affects your no-claims discount, as wordings differ.
