Car insurance is mandatory in Fujairah, exactly as it is everywhere in the UAE: no vehicle can be registered or legally driven without at least third-party liability cover. What changes in Fujairah is not the law but the driving. The emirate sits alone on the UAE's east coast, and Hajar mountain passes, wadi crossings, coastal storms and heavy port traffic all shape which cover is genuinely worth paying for.
That makes the cover decision here different from car insurance in Dubai or Sharjah, even though the rulebook is identical. This guide explains what a policy costs in Fujairah, which cover suits east-coast driving, and how to compare car insurance quotes online and buy in minutes without visiting an insurer's office.
Comprehensive car insurance in Fujairah typically runs between 1.25% and 3% of your car's current market value each year. A car valued at AED 60,000 therefore sits roughly in the AED 750–1,800 range before add-ons, depending on the driver and the repair option chosen.
Third-party liability is priced differently. It is not a percentage of your car's value at all — it comes from a regulated tariff set by vehicle category and seating capacity under the Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy in the Central Bank of the UAE rulebook. This is why a ten-year-old car and a new one of the same class pay similar third-party premiums, and why third-party quotes barely move when a car depreciates.
Starting annual premiums from insurers commonly quoted for Fujairah-registered cars:
| Insurer | Cover and repair option | Starting premium (AED/year) |
| Methaq car insurance | Comprehensive — approved workshops | 1,108 |
| Dubai Insurance car insurance (DIC) | Comprehensive — gold garage | 1,297 |
| AFNIC | Comprehensive | 1,300 |
| Al Sagr car insurance | Comprehensive — approved workshops | 1,838 |
| Sukoon | Comprehensive non-agency — gold | 1,995 |
Starting premiums are indicative only and change with vehicle, driver, claims history and cover chosen. Your own price is confirmed at quote.
The largest single factor is the car itself. Repair cost and parts availability drive the premium, which is why a 4WD used on unpaved tracks and a city hatchback of similar value are priced differently. Popular models with widely stocked parts — Toyota car insurance for a Land Cruiser or Prado, or Nissan car insurance for a Patrol — is usually cheaper to buy than cover for a low-volume import.
After the vehicle, insurers weigh your age and licence history, your claims record, the repair option you select (agency, gold garage or approved workshop), your voluntary excess, and any add-ons. Emirate of registration is not itself a rating factor — see the comparison with Dubai further down.
Yes. Third-party liability cover is the legal minimum for every vehicle registered in Fujairah, and a valid policy must be in force before registration can be issued or renewed. Driving without it carries an AED 500 fine and 4 black points, and the vehicle can be impounded.
The minimum cover itself is set nationally, not by the emirate. Under the Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy, third-party property damage is covered up to AED 2,000,000, while third-party bodily injury is not capped at all — it is the amount judicially awarded, with family members of the insured limited to AED 200,000 each. Those limits are the same in Fujairah as in Abu Dhabi or Dubai, so they are not something to shop on.
Choose comprehensive if your car is financed, worth more than about AED 30,000, or driven on mountain routes, unpaved tracks or during the rain season. Choose third-party only if the car is old, low in value, driven inside the city and you can afford to replace it yourself. On Fujairah's roads that threshold falls on the comprehensive side more often than it does in the western emirates.
| What it covers | Third-party liability | Comprehensive |
| Damage to other people's vehicles and property | Yes, up to AED 2,000,000 | Yes, up to AED 2,000,000 |
| Injury or death of third parties | Yes, uncapped | Yes, uncapped |
| Damage to your own car in an accident | No | Yes |
| Fire and theft of your car | Add-on only | Yes |
| Flood, storm and natural-peril damage | No | Usually available, often as an extension |
| Off-road and unpaved-track driving | No | Add-on only — commonly excluded as standard |
| Roadside assistance and replacement vehicle | No | Add-on |
| Cover for the driver and passengers | No | Limited, extendable by add-on |
Third-party car insurance pays for damage and injury you cause to other people. It pays nothing towards your own vehicle, whatever the circumstances. It is the cheapest way to make a car road-legal, and a reasonable choice for an older car doing short trips inside Fujairah city — but a poor one for anything driven on the mountain highways.
Comprehensive car insurance adds cover for your own vehicle: collision damage, fire, theft and, depending on the policy, weather-related damage. It is also the only cover to which the extensions that matter on the east coast — off-road protection, natural perils, Oman territory, roadside assistance — can be attached.
Comprehensive is broad but not unlimited. Standard exclusions across UAE motor policies include normal wear and tear, mechanical or electrical breakdown, deliberate damage, war and terrorism, and any incident while driving without a valid licence or under the influence.
Two exclusions matter more in Fujairah than elsewhere and are frequently misunderstood. Off-road driving is normally excluded unless you buy the extension. Natural perils such as flood and storm damage are not a blanket exclusion — most UAE insurers offer this cover, though it is often an extension rather than standard, so it has to be confirmed at purchase. Read what car insurance doesn't cover before assuming a claim would be paid.
Fujairah is the only emirate located entirely on the UAE's east coast, facing the Gulf of Oman rather than the Arabian Gulf. That geography produces four risks a standard policy does not automatically address.
The Hajar Mountains run the length of the emirate, and routes through Masafi, Wadi Al Hayl and the Dibba highlands mix steep gradients, loose gravel and unpaved sections. Standard comprehensive policies exclude driving off sealed roads, so a 4WD used on wadi tracks or beach approaches needs the off-road extension. If that is how the car is actually used, 4x4 car insurance is the cover to compare rather than a plain comprehensive policy.
Fujairah records more rainfall than the western emirates, and heavy rain in the Hajar range sends water down wadi channels fast enough to strand or submerge vehicles parked on low ground. Salt-laden coastal air adds corrosion over time. Neither is covered by a third-party policy, and comprehensive policies vary in how they treat weather damage, so flood and storm damage cover is worth confirming line by line before the rain season rather than after it.
A large share of Fujairah drivers cross the mountains daily on the E84 and E89 to work in Sharjah or Dubai, sharing those roads with container traffic serving Fujairah Port. Long mountain commutes raise annual mileage, which raises premiums, and make roadside assistance genuinely useful rather than decorative. Drivers splitting their week between the two emirates should also compare car insurance in Sharjah before renewing.
Fujairah shares crossings with Oman, and a UAE policy does not extend across the border on its own. Two things are needed: an Orange Card, which provides the compulsory third-party cover inside Oman, and an Oman territorial extension on your comprehensive policy if you want damage to your own car covered there. Our guide to the Orange Card for Oman sets out how to obtain one and what it does and does not include.
Add-ons increase the premium, so the test is whether you will realistically use them given how you drive. On the east coast, four earn their place more often than they do elsewhere:
Two more are worth considering by circumstance rather than by emirate: a replacement vehicle while yours is repaired, and personal accident cover for the driver and passengers, which comprehensive policies include only to a limited extent.
Buying online replaces calling insurers individually. You compare real prices side by side, adjust the cover, and receive the policy by email — usually inside a few minutes, and valid for registration purposes the moment it is issued.
You can start a car insurance quote with nothing more than a plate number, and the documents are only needed at the purchase step.
Lookinsure lets you split the premium across four payments instead of paying the year upfront, which is the practical difference between comprehensive and third-party for a lot of drivers. Choose pay for car insurance with Tabby or pay for car insurance with Tamara at checkout.

Insurers licensed in the UAE sell nationally, so a Fujairah-registered car is not limited to locally headquartered companies. What does vary by insurer is the approved garage network on the east coast, which matters when the nearest agency workshop is over the mountains. For a full shortlist with cover comparisons, see the best car insurance companies in Fujairah.
Price differences between insurers on the same car are routinely larger than anything you can save by trimming cover, so comparing quotes is the first and biggest saving. After that, five levers actually move the number:
Renew before the policy lapses, not after. Registration renewal in Fujairah requires a valid insurance policy already in force, so an expired policy stops the registration process rather than merely delaying it — and a lapse can also cost you accumulated no-claims discount.
Renewal online takes the same route as a new purchase: enter the plate, compare current-year quotes rather than auto-renewing, adjust cover and pay. Because a car depreciates, the comprehensive premium should fall year on year for the same cover; if the renewal quote from your existing insurer has not, that is the signal to compare. The vehicle inspection and registration side of the process is covered in our guide to Fujairah vehicle registration renewal.
Not because of the emirate itself. Motor premiums in the UAE are rated on the vehicle, the driver and the cover chosen, under a policy wording and third-party tariff that apply nationally — the emirate on your plate is not a pricing factor in the way it is in some other markets.
What can differ is the mix. Fujairah's vehicle population skews towards 4WDs and older cars, insurers price the off-road and natural-perils extensions that east-coast drivers actually buy, and agency-repair access is thinner outside the main urban corridor. Any of those can push a Fujairah quote up or down relative to a Dubai one for the same driver. The only reliable answer is a quote on your own plate.
You can buy from an insurer based anywhere in the UAE, as long as three things hold. The policy must cover the whole UAE, which almost all do but which is worth confirming. The vehicle must be registered in Fujairah regardless of where the policy was issued. And the insurer's approved garage network should include workshops you can realistically reach — check the approved garage lists by insurer before committing, because a cheap policy repaired 120 km away is not a cheap policy.
If you are buying a used car rather than insuring one you already own, note that insurance cannot be issued until the vehicle is in your name; our guide to transferring car ownership covers the sequence.
Report the accident to the police first. A police report is required for almost every motor claim in the UAE, and without one the insurer can decline to proceed regardless of who was at fault.
Documents to have ready: the police report, your Emirates ID and driving licence, the vehicle registration card, the completed claim form, and clear photographs of the damage.
