Al Wathba National Insurance Company, trading as AWNIC, is an Abu Dhabi-based motor insurer founded in 1996 and regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE. Its individual motor range runs to two policies — comprehensive and third party liability — sold with agency repair, Oman cover and roadside assistance as optional extensions.
You can buy car insurance from Al Wathba alongside every other licensed insurer before you buy or renew via Lookinsure and compare prices.
Al Wathba car insurance is motor cover underwritten by Al Wathba National Insurance Company (AWNIC), a UAE national insurer listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange. Motor is the company's largest line of business, accounting for roughly two-thirds of its written premiums, and it is sold direct, through brokers and through comparison platforms.
Policies run for 12 months, in line with the Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy that governs all UAE motor cover.
AWNIC car insurance is sold as two individual motor products. The choice between them is not a preference — it is a threshold. Take comprehensive car insurance if your car is financed, leased, or worth enough that you could not replace it out of pocket. Take third-party car insurance only if the car is old enough that its market value is lower than the extra premium over the policy year. If you are weighing the two, the full comprehensive vs third-party comparison sets out where the line usually falls.
| Cover | Comprehensive | Third party liability |
|---|---|---|
| Damage to the other party's vehicle or property | Included | Included |
| Third-party bodily injury | Included | Included |
| Loss or damage to your own vehicle | Included | Not covered |
| Fire and theft | Included | Not covered |
| Windscreen damage | Included | Not covered |
| Ambulance service after an accident | Included | Not covered |
| Own damage cover for vehicles up to 10 years old | Included | Not covered |
| Agency repair | Optional extension | Not available |
| Oman cover and Orange Card | Optional extension | Orange Card on request |
| Legally required to drive in the UAE | Yes | Yes |
Fleets and company-owned vehicles are written separately, under AWNIC's corporate lines rather than its individual motor range. If you are insuring more than one business vehicle, start with commercial vehicle insurance instead of an individual policy.
A comprehensive Al Wathba motor insurance policy pays for damage to your own car as well as the legal liability you owe to others. Sandstorm and flood damage cover matters more in the UAE than most drivers expect — the heaviest claim seasons here follow rain, not collisions.
These exclusions are standard across UAE motor policies rather than specific to Al Wathba, and they are the reason most rejected claims are rejected. Desert and off-road driving is the one that catches drivers out most often: it sits outside a standard policy, and cover has to be bought as 4x4 off-road cover before the trip, not after it.
The extensions below attach to a comprehensive policy and are priced individually, so the quote you compare should list the ones you actually intend to use. The Oman extensions are worth understanding before a border run: the standard extension covers your own vehicle only, while third-party liability in Oman requires a separate Orange Card for Oman, issued on request.
| Add-on | What it does |
|---|---|
| Agency repair | Repairs carried out at the manufacturer's authorised workshop, available for up to 2 years |
| Own damage cover up to 10 years | Extends own-damage protection to older vehicles, up to 10 years from first registration |
| Oman cover extension | Own-damage protection while the vehicle is in the Sultanate of Oman |
| Orange Card — on request | Third-party liability cover for Oman, issued separately from the own-damage extension |
| Personal accident cover | Medical expenses and compensation for the driver and passengers after an accident |
| 24/7 roadside assistance | Breakdown recovery, towing, battery boost, flat-tyre repair, fuel delivery and lock-out help |
| Car hire allowance | A replacement vehicle for 7 to 10 days following a covered accident |
| Windscreen cover | Repair or replacement of the insured windscreen without an additional charge |
| Fire and theft cover | Protection where the vehicle is stolen or damaged by fire |
| Ambulance service | Ambulance dispatch where an accident requires it |
The Al Wathba insurance contact number for policy service and motor claims is the same line: 600 544 040. Email reaches the same team at [email protected]. Al Wathba insurance in Abu Dhabi is run from the head office, with a second service office in Dubai — if you are shopping locally, compare that against every insurer selling car insurance in Abu Dhabi rather than assuming the branch nearest you has the best price.
Al Wathba's service network is concentrated in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, with one Dubai office and a traffic office at Nad Al Hamar. There is no branch in Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain or Fujairah, so drivers in the Northern Emirates deal with the company online or by phone — one reason to check what insurers selling car insurance in Sharjah and car insurance in Al Ain offer locally before committing.

Report the accident to Al Wathba as soon as you have the police report — late notification is one of the most common reasons a UAE motor claim is refused. The process is the same whether you file through the AWNIC website, the mobile app or a motor claims office, and you can follow the general how to claim car insurance in the UAE guide for the steps that apply to every insurer. It is also worth knowing why car insurance claims get rejected before you file.
Two document sets matter: one to buy or renew the policy, and one to claim on it. The buying set is standard across UAE insurers, and the full list of documents required for car insurance applies to Al Wathba as it does to any licensed provider.
Al Wathba runs a premium garage network organised by emirate, covering Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman and Fujairah — a wider repair footprint than its branch footprint, which matters if you live outside Abu Dhabi. Repairs at a network garage are handled directly between the garage and the insurer. Agency repair is the separate, paid extension: it sends the car to the manufacturer's own workshop instead, and is available for up to 2 years. If you are comparing repair networks across insurers, the UAE insurance garage lists set them out side by side.
An Al Wathba policy runs for 12 months and lapses on its expiry date, which leaves the vehicle illegal to drive and the registration impossible to renew. You can renew directly with AWNIC, or renew through Lookinsure and see what the rest of the market quotes for the same vehicle in the same step. Carry your no-claims bonus across when you switch — it survives a change of insurer, and forgetting to claim it is the most expensive thing you can do at renewal. If the premium lands awkwardly, you can also pay in four with Tabby.
Choose Al Wathba if you drive in Abu Dhabi or Al Ain and want an insurer with claims offices you can physically walk into — that is where its network is genuinely strong, and walk-in claims handling is worth real money when something goes wrong. Look elsewhere if you are in the Northern Emirates and expect branch service, because there isn't any. The price question is separate from the service one: run the vehicle through the UAE car insurance providers comparison before renewing, because a national insurer's renewal quote is not automatically the cheapest one on the same car.
