YAS Takaful car insurance was a Sharia-compliant motor takaful product sold in the UAE by YAS Takaful PJSC, an Abu Dhabi insurer founded in 2008 and known until 2020 as Al Hilal Takaful. On 18 August 2025 the Central Bank of the UAE suspended the company's licence, so YAS Takaful can no longer issue or renew motor policies. It remains responsible for every contract signed before that date.
This page explains what the suspension means for existing policyholders, what the cover included, and where to go for takaful cover you can still buy today.
Sharia-compliant motor cover is widely available in the UAE, and switching operator does not mean giving up the takaful structure. If the takaful model is what mattered to you, start with the takaful car insurance in the UAE overview, which sets out how the participant fund and surplus distribution work across operators.
Among operators currently writing motor business, Methaq car insurance has the widest approved-garage network of the UAE takaful providers, and Salama car insurance is the longest-established name in the segment.
One caution when you compare. Watania Takaful car insurance and Noor Takaful car insurance are the same underwriter following a 2023 group rename, so treat quotes from the two as one option rather than two.
If you would rather widen the field beyond takaful operators, the market review of the best car insurance companies in Abu Dhabi covers conventional insurers on the same criteria.
The Central Bank of the UAE suspended the licence of YAS Takaful PJSC on 18 August 2025 under Article 33(2)(k) of Federal Decree Law No. (48) of 2023 Regulating Insurance Activities, citing the company's failure to comply with the regulatory framework governing insurance companies in the UAE. The regulator's statement is the primary source for everything on this page, and it is unambiguous on one point: YAS Takaful remains liable for all rights and obligations arising from insurance contracts concluded before the suspension.
A suspension is not the same thing as a closure. The company keeps its legal existence and its obligations to existing customers, but it cannot write new business or renew expiring policies while the suspension stands. As of September 2026 the suspension has not been lifted, the company's own website is a holding page, and no reinstatement has been published by the Central Bank.
If your certificate was issued before 18 August 2025, your cover runs to its stated expiry date and your right to claim under it survives the suspension. What you cannot do is renew it with YAS Takaful. When the policy lapses you need a new insurer, and because UAE law requires at least third-party motor cover for every registered vehicle, that has to be arranged before your current certificate expires — not after.
The practical deadline is your vehicle registration renewal. The RTA and the other emirates' licensing authorities will not renew a Mulkiya without a valid insurance certificate, so a lapsed YAS Takaful policy becomes a registration problem within days. Give yourself the full 30-day window insurers normally allow and compare car insurance quotes online before the expiry date rather than on it.
Replacing the cover is the straightforward part. If you were on a full-cover plan you are looking for comprehensive car insurance with a comparable agreed value and deductible; if you were on the minimum legal plan, third-party car insurance is the equivalent. As a rule of thumb, comprehensive premiums in the UAE run between 1.3% and 3% of a car's market value per year, so a vehicle valued at AED 60,000 usually sits somewhere between AED 780 and AED 1,800 — a useful sanity check when you compare what YAS Takaful charged against what you are quoted now.
If the timing is awkward, the cost can be spread. Lookinsure lets you settle a new policy over four interest-free payments — car insurance with Tabby or car insurance with Tamara — and you can also pay car insurance in instalments without changing the cover you get.
Claims under pre-suspension policies are still the company's responsibility, and the process has not changed. Report the incident promptly — most UAE motor policies require notification within a short window of the event, and a late report is one of the few grounds on which a valid claim can still be declined.
If a claim on a pre-suspension policy is refused or goes unanswered, the escalation route is the Central Bank of the UAE's insurance complaints channel, which handles disputes with licensed and suspended insurers alike.
The detail below describes the cover as it was sold, so existing policyholders can check what their own certificate should include. It is not an offer — no YAS Takaful policy can be bought or renewed today. Your policy schedule and the Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy govern in every case where the two differ.
YAS Takaful motor insurance came in the two forms every UAE insurer offers, and the choice between them turns on one question: the value of the car. Choose comprehensive if your vehicle is financed or worth more than roughly AED 30,000; third-party liability is the sensible economy only on older cars you could afford to replace yourself.
| Coverage area | Comprehensive | Third-party liability (TPL) |
|---|---|---|
| Protection level | Extensive, all-round coverage | Basic, legally required coverage |
| Own vehicle damage | Covered — accidents, fire, theft, natural disasters | Not covered |
| Theft and fire | Covered | Not covered |
| Natural disasters | Covered — floods, sandstorms, hail | Not covered |
| Third-party bodily injury | Covered | Covered |
| Third-party property damage | Covered up to AED 5 million | Covered up to AED 5 million |
| Windscreen repair | Included | Not covered |
| Courtesy car during repairs | Included, up to 7 days | Not covered |
| UAE legal compliance | Yes | Yes |
| Best suited to | New or high-value cars needing full protection | Older cars, budget-focused drivers |
Comprehensive plans could be extended with the covers below. If any of these appear on your schedule, they remain part of the contract for its remaining term.
YAS Takaful PJSC is an Abu Dhabi takaful operator founded in 2008 as Al Hilal Takaful and renamed after Siraj Holding acquired it in 2020. It wrote motor, health, travel and property takaful under a risk-sharing model in which participants contribute to a common fund, surplus can be returned to participants, and interest-bearing instruments are excluded — the structural difference between takaful and conventional insurance.
The YAS Takaful insurance contact number is 800 889 and the customer email is [email protected], both still shown on the company's holding page as of September 2026. A WhatsApp line on 050 742 1852 has also been published, though it could not be independently confirmed while the company's website is offline.
The YAS Takaful Abu Dhabi office at Al Nahyan Camp remains the registered address for written correspondence, and because most of the company's motor book sat in the capital, drivers replacing this cover are usually comparing car insurance in Abu Dhabi. Anyone searching for YAS Takaful medical insurance is looking at a separate product line, affected by the same suspension; Lookinsure does not currently list a YAS Takaful health page.
The verdict is straightforward: this is not an insurer to buy from, and the regulator has made that decision for you. That is a statement about licence status, not about service quality, and it is the only judgement on this page that rests on documented fact rather than opinion.
On service itself, the public record is thin and mixed. Reviews of YAS Takaful in Abu Dhabi and Dubai cluster around claims turnaround and the difficulty of reaching a case handler, which is the ordinary complaint pattern for UAE motor insurers and not distinctive to this one. Public ratings are also skewed by the well-documented tendency for dissatisfied customers to be far likelier to post than satisfied ones. Lookinsure does not publish a star rating for YAS Takaful, because there is no verified first-party dataset behind one — and inventing a score for a suspended insurer would be worse than useless.
The more useful signal is the regulatory one. A suspension under Article 33(2)(k) follows a compliance failure serious enough for the Central Bank to stop the company writing business, and no amount of positive service feedback offsets that when you are choosing where to place a new policy.
